Indspire Statement re: Nadya and Amira Gill

April 14, 2023 – Ohsweken, ON

Indspire is aware of allegations regarding two individuals who have falsely claimed Inuit identity and, in doing so, obtained funding for their post-secondary education from our organization.

To obtain funding from Indspire’s Building Brighter Futures: Bursaries & Scholarships (BBF) program, students must demonstrate membership and/or enrolment in a federally recognized First Nations, Métis, or Inuit nation, community, or organization. Along with their applications, both Nadya Gill and Amira Gill provided proof of enrolment in a recognized organization – Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI). As such, they qualified for funding under Indspire’s funding policy.

Indspire has been in communication with NTI since these allegations were made public. On April 12, 2023, NTI responded to a letter from Indspire detailing NTI’s progress to date. There is an ongoing investigation into the Gill sisters’ identity claims, and Indspire is awaiting the conclusion of this investigation.

In accordance with NTI’s process, Nadya Gill and Amira Gill have been given 30 days to respond to NTI’s questions regarding their claims to Inuit identity. Indspire will be following this process closely and will act accordingly once the findings are established.
