Youth – First Nation (2025)
Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, MB
“Movement has a deeper ability of healing things that maybe you don’t think can be healed while bringing people together and finding a way to move forward together…When you have so many people who are passionate about what you’re doing, it makes it easy.”
Leadership and teamwork come naturally to Tréchelle Bunn. As Youth Chief of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO), she represents Indigenous youth from 34 communities in southern Manitoba. While obtaining a B.A. in Criminology with a minor in Indigenous Studies from the University of Manitoba, Tréchelle played for the UM Bisons women’s hockey team and the University of Calgary’s Dinos women’s hockey team. She also played for Team Manitoba during the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships.
Tréchelle is the creator of the Reconciliation Run, the first-ever National Day for Truth & Reconciliation half-marathon which is now in its third year. Her voice is heard internationally; in 2024, she spoke as the SCO’s delegate at the United Nations’ Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. She has also served as a Generation for Equality Delegate at the Native Women’s Association of Canada. Among her numerous accolades are CBC Manitoba’s “Future 40” Award, the Winnipeg Jets Women in Sports Honoree, and the Nellie McClung Foundation Inspiring Young Leader Award.
Tréchelle dreams of becoming a lawyer and is currently studying at Robson Hall, the University of Manitoba’s law school. She is the Vice President of Internal Relations for the Manitoba Indigenous Law Students’ Association and also works at Manitoba’s first Prison Law Clinic.
