Youth – Métis (2025)
Otipemisiwak Métis Government, AB
“As a Métis woman and curriculum studies scholar, I notice that when I carry out work of Truth Before Reconciliation education, it reaffirms my own commitments to the Calls to Action…I hold onto the hope of achieving what the survivors gifted to us: responding fully to all 94 Calls.”
Education has been a lifelong pursuit for Madelaine McCracken; she dreamt of becoming a teacher since she was eight years old. Originally born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, she obtained her B.Ed. in Elementary Education from Mount Royal University and then her M.Ed. in Education from the University of Ottawa. It was during her post-secondary journey that she realized she wanted to teach teachers, laying a strong foundation for educators to meaningfully and accurately teach Indigenous histories and perspectives.
She has been active in student government at both Mount Royal University and the University of Ottawa and in the first year of her M.Ed., Madelaine created Research Time: a podcast which explores a wide variety of education-related topics. In addition to her post-secondary student experience, she worked at the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society as their Education and Public Engagement Coordinator and was a Coordinating Editor for their journal, the First Nations Child & Family Review.
Currently serving as a part-time professor while pursuing a Ph.D. in the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa, Madelaine ensures that her SSHRC-funded and Métis-specific research is grounded in conversational and ethical research practices through podcasting.
