Presented by Keven Fletcher and Jo-Ina Young

As a school with a low Indigenous population and British roots, SMUS’ path to adopt a local, traditional understanding of what it means to be in relationship with our Elders and Cultural Specialists has been…complex and rewarding.

Join Keven Fletcher (SMUS Chaplain/Indigenous Liaison) and Elder Jo-Ina Young (Métis) as they share what it can mean to place relationship at the centre of connections between schools and community members. The session covers (1) how clarity of purpose carries self-reinforcing power, (2) how relationships can be meaningfully deepened, and (3) how moving from presence to belonging shifts the experience of students, teachers, and Elders alike.

Expect a bit of policy, a lot of stories, and an honest exploration of the joys and challenges of this work. Participants will leave with resources in hand and on line. Whether you’re just beginning this journey or have been building relationships with Indigenous communities for years, we hope you will leave with fresh ideas and a deeper understanding of how authentic relationships make the difference.
