Equity Through Structured Literacy – Empowering Indigenous Students
Indspire > Events > National Gathering > Presentations > Equity Through Structured Literacy – Empowering Indigenous StudentsPresented by Kelly Milne and Kim Angus
Participants will develop an understanding of the disparity in literacy outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners and the urgent need to close this opportunity gap. They will explore how the implementation of structured literacy, supported by a coordinated system of practice and ongoing analysis of student, school, and system-wide data, is essential to improving outcomes for Indigenous students. Participants will also reflect on their responsibility to equip students with the literacy skills needed to challenge systemic barriers and confidently walk in two worlds. In addition, they will see how culturally connected texts, perspectives, and teachings can be intentionally integrated into literacy instruction to strengthen students’ sense of identity, belonging, and success.
