Ten Years of Secret Path: Bringing Reconciliation to Learning Spaces Throughout Canada
Indspire > Events > National Gathering > Presentations > Ten Years of Secret Path: Bringing Reconciliation to Learning Spaces Throughout CanadaPresented by Mair Greenfield
This fall marks the 10th anniversary of Secret Path, the graphic novel written by Gord Downie and illustrated by Jeff Lemire — a work Gord created so that all Canadians could learn the true history of residential schools and honour the story of Chanie Wenjack. This session invites educators to mark this milestone by exploring how the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund’s (DWF) resources make reconciliation education accessible, meaningful, and manageable in any subject area and at any grade level.
Attendees will see real reconciliACTIONs taken by Legacy Schools throughout the country, and learn practical strategies for adapting DWF’s ready-made lesson plans to fit their own curriculum — no matter what they teach. The goal is simple: leave with something you can use on a Monday morning. Educators will be introduced to DWF’s new Learning Management System, The HUB, home to adaptable lesson plans, short films, and printable classroom resources built for teachers at every experience level. Attendees will also learn how to register their class for Walk for Wenjack and how to launch the Secret Path Unit Plan as a cross-curricular entry point into reconciliation learning — connecting history, art, music, and storytelling in one unit. Whether you’re new to reconciliaction or ready to go deeper, you’ll leave with concrete tools, real classroom examples, and a clear next step to bring truth and reconciliation forward into your school year.
