Presented by Jaypeetee Arnakak and Olivia Griffin

The Inuktitut Literacy Sequence is a logical sequence for learning sound-symbol correspondences in the Inuktitut syllabic writing system. It adapts Structured Literacy principles to the structure of the Inuit language so that learners can build and use their knowledge by decoding text. In this presentation, we share the process and theory underlying the Inuktitut Literacy Sequence, sample decodable texts, and ongoing work on a teaching manual with lesson plans. This presentation will be interesting to Indigenous educators and to anybody looking to develop structured literacy programs in other Indigenous languages, or languages which use a syllabic writing system.
