For Letitia Pokiak, success in her chosen career i

For Letitia Pokiak, success in her chosen career is a family affair! Currently in her second year of her master’s program in anthropology at the University of Victoria, this Inuit student is supported by the Stantec Group and the Government of Canada through Indspire’s Building Brighter Futures: Bursaries, Scholarships, and Awards program.

After graduation, she wants to work in policy development as a consultant, building bridges of understanding between Indigenous groups and organizations that consult with them. She says, “This bursary allows me to continue my MA Anthropology thesis without having to worry about providing for my young family…I hope that my degree will be an example and achievement for all Indigenous students, to portray that they too can attend post-secondary studies for the benefit of their home communities.”

#Indigenization is happening at the University of

#Indigenization is happening at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education! OISE just announced the development of its new Indigenous Educational Research Centre, a space where Indigenous faculty and students can meet, work on Indigenous-specific projects, and engage in conversations about their work. It was developed through a variety of Indigenous and non-Indigenous partnerships as an important response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.

Dr. Sandra Styres, an Assistant Professor in OISE’s department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, says: “The centre will better equip the university to respond to and help shape how institutions can go beyond token Indigenization and reconciliatory efforts…[it] supports the ways Indigenous faculty and graduate students promote Indigenous educational research within the academy while furthering the institutional goals of reconciliation.”
