Pearl Calahasen

Public Service (2004)

Pearl Calahasen is currently the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development for the Province of Alberta. She was the first Métis woman ever elected in Alberta. She has served as an MLA since 1989, representing one of the largest constituencies in the province. Born and raised in Grouard, Alberta, Ms. Calahasen earned a B.A. in Education from the University of Alberta and an M.A. from the University of Oregon. She has spent her life championing First Nations’ issues, specifically those dealing with education, and the rights of children and families. As well, she has been involved in the development of language programs, adult education, curriculum development, policy and programming, and community affairs. She is also very concerned with economic development and human rights.
