About Guiding the Journey Indigenous Educator Awards

Indigenous educators guide their students’ journey through leadership, innovative practice, and dedication to community. Guiding the Journey recognizes Indigenous educators who have made valuable contributions to community-based education and honour the principles of Indigenous knowledge. Award recipients will receive a framed award, a $1,000 prize and an all-expense paid trip to the awards ceremony in Montreal, QC. Recipients must accept and attend the event in order to receive the award.


Community Service
First Nation, Inuit or Métis person who demonstrated commitment to K-12 students over the span of a long career in education.

Innovative Practice
First Nation, Inuit or Métis person who consistently demonstrates teaching practices and strategies that exemplify excellence in terms of creativity, use of technology and effective pedagogy in the classroom.

First Nation, Inuit or Métis person who consistently takes on a leadership role in the educational community that fosters achievement amongst K-12 students.

Language, Culture and Traditions
First Nation, Inuit or Métis person who integrates language, culture and Indigenous knowledge into classroom learning and creates a learning environment that is open to multiple ways of knowing the world.

Role Model
First Nation, Inuit or Métis person who teaches by example, positive and healthy lifestyle choices that have had a significant influence on K-12 students.

Partner in Indigenous Education
Non-Indigenous educator who has made a significant contribution to furthering K-12 Indigenous student success.

How to Nominate an Educator

Complete online form
Scan/email two to five letters of support and nominee’s resume to educatorawards@indspire.ca

Note: As part of Guiding the Journey: Indigenous Educator Award process, only the recipients selected for the current year are contacted. If your nomination was not selected this year, it will go forward to the next two juries.

Eligibility Criteria

Educator Awards
Any person in Canada may nominate individuals who:

  • Demonstrate outstanding achievement in Indigenous education
  • Canadian born or Permanent Canadian residents
  • Practicing K-12 educators in a classroom

Guiding the Journey jurors are NOT eligible to nominate and may not submit nominations support letters


The nominator will need to confirm the nominee is one of following; First Nation (including status and non-status; on- or off-reserve), Inuit, Métis, non-Indigenous education partner.

Consent of Nominee

Nominee has to provide consent in order to be nominated.

Letters of Support

Submit a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 letters of support with nomination.


Submit resume of nominee with nomination.

Nominee’s Achievements and Contributions

Achievements and Awards
Provide a description of the candidate’s achievements and awards. Clearly explain how the candidate has made a contribution worthy of national recognition. What has the candidate done that was publically acknowledged or made an impact at the community or local level? (Maximum 500 words)

Career Contributions
Describe how the candidate has made an important contribution to his/her career field. How does this relate to his/her nomination for this Award? You may include references to community service, innovative practices, professional growth, research papers, presentations/speeches, etc. Clearly state how this has influenced your nomination of the candidate. (Maximum 500 words)

Contribution to Community
Describe how the candidate has made an important contribution to the well-being (physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual) of First Nation, Inuit, and/or Métis students at the community level. (Maximum 500 words)
Add other noteworthy details about the candidate. (Maximum 200 words)
